start something.

Sometimes when I’m about to do something that I’m not sure I can do, I become very afraid of the possibility of failure.  I think it’s important to realize that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so you might as well give yourself a chance.  If you start something, you have a better chance of succeeding than if you were to be too afraid to try.  Believe in yourself- and whatever it is that you’re struggling with, just remember that you’re not going to make any progress unless you try.

This is a quote I found and fell in love with.  What a great reminder for the new year.

Don’t hold grudges.

try this.

I challenge you to try this for three days. Just give it three days, but really treat every person you meet like they are going to die by midnight. This means every single person you come in contact with- a waitress, salesperson, that annoying family member or neighbor…the list goes on.

I came across this a while ago, while in college, and I tried it.  Not only did it change how I treated people immediately, but it changed my perspective about a lot of things.  When there’s a sense of urgency in your life, you think differently.  Little things that used to upset you suddenly don’t matter anymore.  You realize what is important.  I hope that this somewhat silly challenge is taken seriously by someone, and that it changes your life for a little more than just three days.  Just try it.

a sunset blessing.

As I was driving down the road today, I couldn’t help but notice how captivating the sunset was this evening. I was also stuck in traffic, so I didn’t have much else to do besides notice things and think. So I snapped this picture (below), unedited.

My mind immediately pictured a rainbow. This sunset is very similar to a rainbow. The colors blending into each other like they are, each somehow becoming the next, evolving into the next color, leaving behind a light trace of itself. It is just absolutely beautiful. And some people are too busy with the monotony of life to even notice it. Did you know the average sunset takes only two minutes to be completed. Don’t be too busy. Take two minutes to notice little things.

Also, the simple presence of this sunset reminded me of God’s power. God is so powerful that He created the Sun, Earth, Moon and stars. He gave us the gift of seeing sunsets like these every day. How incredible is that? Who are we that we deserve to experience this day after day? Yet, the Bible deems us very valuable:

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” -Matthew 6:26

In light of the tragedy that occurred last week, I find myself not only grieving, but worrying about my safety and security of my family. This verse calms me and makes me remember that God takes care of even the birds, who do nothing for Him. How much more will He take care of us, His children, whom He loves? This comforts me in the same way the sunset does.

In the Old Testament, God made a covenant with himself after the Great Flood promising to never wipe out the entire human race ever again. The symbol for this covenant was the rainbow. Often times people think Noah and God made some type of promise to each other and the rainbow symbolizes their deal, when in fact, the rainbow serves as a reminder to God of his covenant to himself. This sunset looks so much like a rainbow that it comforts me in a way such that I feel like God is looking out for his people at this very hour.

I just wanted to take a moment to remind myself of the many blessings God has given me daily, like a sunset- so simple and serene yet so complex in its beauty that it amazes me.

live a life you’re proud of.

A quote I love by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  “I hope you live a life you’re proud of.  If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”

Just a reminder to motivate you to be proud of what you do everyday, kind of like what Steve Jobs was talking about when he said something like “I wake up every morning and look in the mirror and ask myself if I die tomorrow, would I want to do what I’m about to do today?  Whenever the answer’s been no for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”

You’re in charge of your life.  If you’re continuing to do something you’re not proud of, change it.  Start over.  You’re strong enough, trust me.

don’t forget

I love this song and think it’s a great reminder to stop and remember not to get too “busy to miss” things this holiday season, such as visiting with family and friends.

Among the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I thought this quote was a good reminder for everyone to be thankful for the things we have.

If you are at a computer screen reading this (or reading via tablet/iPad), be thankful. Don’t get so busy that you forget how lucky you are this Christmas. Count your blessings and don’t take any little thing for granted. Something that seems like a little thing to you may be someone else’s everything. Just a reminder…
